FAQ
Think of music production like building a house.
Mixing is like building the individual rooms. It’s the process of taking all the separate recorded tracks—like vocals, drums, guitar, and bass—and balancing them to create a cohesive and clear song. The mixing engineer adjusts the volume, EQ (tonal balance), and effects (like reverb and delay) for each individual instrument to ensure they all sound good together and don’t clash. The goal is to create a dynamic and emotionally engaging listening experience.
Mastering, on the other hand, is the final quality control and polish of the entire house. It’s done after the mixing is complete. The mastering engineer takes the final, single stereo file of the mixed song and makes it ready for commercial release. This involves subtle, but crucial, enhancements to the overall sound, like optimizing the loudness, ensuring it sounds great on all speakers (from headphones to car stereos), and adding a final layer of sonic glue. Mastering is what makes your song sound professional and ready to stand alongside other commercial tracks.
In short:
Mastering is about the finished song sounding its best and being prepared for distribution.
Mixing is about the individual parts of a song working together.
How do I send my audio files to you?
1. File Types
We accept high-quality, uncompressed audio files. This is crucial for preserving the dynamic range and fidelity of your tracks. Please export your files as either:
- WAV (recommended)
- AIFF
Important Note for Logic Pro Users: If you are using Logic Pro, you can send me the project file. However, please ensure that all MIDI tracks, including virtual instruments (VIs) and samplers, have been bounced to audio first. This guarantees that I hear the exact sound you intended.
2. Naming Your Files
Clear and consistent file naming is essential for a smooth workflow. Please use a meaningful and organized naming convention, such as:
- Kick in
- Kick Out
- Vocal Lead
- Backing Vocal_1
- Backing Vocal_2
Please avoid generic names like “Audio_1” or “Track_2.” A little organisation upfront saves a lot of time later.
3. Sending Your Files
Once you have your files ready, please place them all in a single folder named with your song title and your name (e.g. [Name of song – Band Name] Then, compress the folder into a single .zip file.
Finally, send the compressed folder to me using a file transfer service. We recommend using WeTransfer, as it is free, secure, and designed for sending large files easily. Simply go to their website, upload your file, enter my email address, and include a brief message. You will receive a confirmation email once the transfer is complete.
Mixing is a craft that requires time, care, and attention to detail. It’s a critical part of the creative process that ensures your song not only sounds great but also translates well across different listening systems—from car stereos to phone speakers. For these reasons, I generally do not recommend rushing the mixing process.
However, I understand that sometimes tight deadlines are unavoidable. If you have an urgent deadline for a radio submission or other time-sensitive release, I can offer a 48-hour Fast-Track Turnaround for a single song.
This expedited service costs an additional £60 per song. This charge accounts for putting other client projects on hold to focus entirely on your mix. Please note that this service is limited to one song per client at a time to maintain the quality and focus required for a professional mix.
To request this service, please contact me directly with your project details and deadline before sending your files.
To ensure the highest quality and consistency, I primarily work with high-quality audio files (WAV or AIFF) exported from your session.
However, if you are a Logic Pro user, you are welcome to send me the entire project session. Please remember to follow the instructions in the “How Do I Send My Audio Files To You?” section: all MIDI tracks and virtual instruments must be bounced to audio before sending the session file. This is crucial for me to hear your mix exactly as you intended.
For all other DAWs (Pro Tools, Ableton, FL Studio, etc.), please export your tracks as individual, uncompressed audio files. This is the most reliable way to maintain the integrity of your mix and avoid any compatibility issues. There is details on how to send these to me in the FAQ section above ‘How do I send my audio Files to you?’
What format should my audio files be in?
For the best possible audio quality and compatibility, it is essential to send your files in a lossless, uncompressed format. We highly recommend using WAV files, which are the industry standard for professional audio production.
If you are a Mac user, AIFF files are also perfectly acceptable. Both WAV and AIFF formats are uncompressed and contain all of the original audio data from your session, ensuring no quality is lost during the transfer.
Why uncompressed is important:
Unlike compressed formats like MP3 or AAC, which “throw away” audio information to reduce file size, WAV and AIFF files retain every detail of your mix. This is crucial for me to have the full dynamic range and clarity needed to perform a high-quality mix.
In summary, please send your files as either:
- WAV (Recommended)
- AIFF
Please avoid sending compressed file formats like MP3, M4A, or AAC, as they are not suitable for professional mixing.
Why are your prices better than other similar services
My pricing structure is a direct reflection of our commitment to providing the best possible value to every artist. There are two key factors that allow me to offer premium results at a more accessible price point:
1. A Fiscally Prudent Business Model: I operate from an area with a lower cost of living compared to major metropolitan music hubs. This allows me to maintain a lean overhead without compromising on the quality of my equipment, expertise, or the time dedicated to each project. Rather than keeping these savings as profit, I choose to pass them directly on to you, the client. This ensures you receive top-tier, professional mixing and mastering services without the premium price tag often associated with studios in more expensive locations.
2. A Focus on Value, Not Just Price: While my prices are competitive, my focus is on delivering exceptional value. I don’t believe in charging more just because the market allows for it. Instead, my goal is to provide a service that is both high-quality and attainable for independent artists and producers. This means you receive the same level of dedication, a keen artistic ear, and technical precision as you would from a more expensive service, ensuring your music sounds its absolute best and stands out from the competition.
In short, you are getting the full benefit of a skilled professional and a top-tier studio, but at a price that reflects a smart and efficient business model designed to serve the music community.
